What Proton VPN protects
Without a VPN, the local network and internet provider handle your traffic directly. HTTPS already encrypts the contents of modern web connections, but network observers can still learn information from connection patterns and destination infrastructure.
A VPN can help when:
- using airport, hotel or café Wi-Fi;
- reducing what an internet provider can associate with your browsing destinations;
- hiding your residential IP address from sites and peers;
- routing traffic through another country;
- accessing the open internet under network censorship;
- protecting P2P traffic on a supported paid server.

Why Proton's no-logs claim is more credible
Every VPN can write “no logs” on a landing page. Useful evidence is harder.
Proton publishes its apps as open source and commissions independent reviews. In June 2026 it published its fifth consecutive annual third-party audit of the production no-logs infrastructure. The reported scope included browsing activity, DNS queries, destinations, network contents and user-identifiable connection metadata.
An audit does not guarantee future behaviour, but inspecting live server configuration and operating processes is stronger evidence than auditing marketing copy alone.
Proton states that it does not log visited sites, traffic contents, IP addresses, session length or location information for VPN activity. The service operates under Swiss law, where Proton says VPN services do not have forced logging obligations under the current framework.

The free tier is not a time-limited trial. Proton says paying users fund it and that it applies no artificial data or time limit. Automatic server selection and one-device use are the main practical constraints.
Paid network counts and promotions change frequently. Proton's pricing page is the right place to verify the current country list, introductory price and renewal price. Do not choose a multi-year deal based only on the displayed monthly equivalent.

The features that matter
Kill switch
A kill switch is valuable on unreliable networks because it blocks traffic when the VPN connection fails. Test it on every operating system you rely on; implementation details and always-on behaviour vary by platform.
NetShield
NetShield uses DNS filtering to block known advertising, tracking and malware domains on paid plans. It is useful network-level hygiene, but it cannot inspect every threat and is not a replacement for browser protections or endpoint security.
Secure Core
Secure Core routes traffic through an additional hardened location. That can reduce risk from a compromised exit server or hostile jurisdiction, at the cost of extra latency. Use it for a relevant threat model, not because more hops always mean better everyday performance.
Split tunnelling
Split tunnelling lets selected apps or destinations bypass the VPN. It can solve problems with printers, banking or latency-sensitive software, but every exception reduces coverage. Document exclusions rather than accumulating them until most traffic bypasses protection.
Stealth
The Stealth protocol is intended to make VPN traffic harder to identify on restrictive networks. It may help where standard VPN protocols are blocked, although no circumvention method is guaranteed everywhere.
A sensible setup
- Install only from Proton's official site or app-store listing.
- Enable automatic updates.
- Set auto-connect on untrusted networks.
- Turn on the kill switch where appropriate.
- Test DNS and IP behaviour after connection.
- Keep local-network access off unless printers or other trusted devices require it.
- Use the closest suitable server for normal work; long-distance routing adds latency.
- Test work VPNs, banking, streaming and video calls before making the connection always-on.
If an employer requires its own corporate VPN, do not assume two VPN clients will coexist reliably. Follow the organization's instructions and never route company traffic through an unapproved consumer service.
Privacy caveats
A Proton Account still contains account information governed by Proton's privacy policy. Payment processors may receive billing information. App stores can observe downloads or subscriptions. A VPN hides traffic from some parties while exposing a relationship with the VPN service itself.
For high-risk anonymity, a personal VPN account may not be the correct tool. Threats involving state surveillance, targeted device compromise or identity separation require specialist operational-security advice, potentially including Tor and dedicated devices.
Final verdict
Proton VPN's combination of a usable free tier, open-source clients and recurring infrastructure audits gives it a stronger trust story than most free VPNs. Free is sufficient for occasional privacy on one device. Plus is justified by location control, faster servers, advanced routing and multi-device coverage—not by fear-driven claims that everyone needs a VPN running every minute.
